Pee’s, Poo’s, Prolapses and the Pelvic Floor.

  • Essential Physotherapy 86 East Street Ashburton New Zealand (map)

Almost every woman I have met in my practice or teaching will make a comment on the state of their pelvic floor. Ranging from “my core is so weak” to “I don’t need to worry about my pelvic floor”, “its all part of getting old”, “I thought it was normal after a baby"

Its COMMON but NOT NORMAL.

Here are a few facts:

  • 1 in 3 women who have had a baby will experience Pelvic Floor Dysfunction

  • 46.2% of women have some major Pelvic Floor Dysfunction in their life

  • 50% over 50 will suffer prolapse

  • 1 in 5 women over the age of 40 will have an anal sphincter problem (don’t be fooled into thinking this only happens to older women!!!)

  • Worldwide, 14-32% of women of childbearing age will suffer from Chronic Pelvic pain

  • Rates are reported between 1 in 10 and 1 in 13 women worldwide experience painful sex

There are so many things that can cause, or be caused by pelvic floor dysfunction. And although it all seems very doom and gloom, physiotherapy can really help make a big difference. Treatment is so much more than just “squeezing your core and holding in wee’s or poo's”; most women do not know how to contract their pelvic floor correctly and this will contribute to their symptoms.

Topics will include :

  • what the pelvic floor is and how it works along with the core

  • what can go wrong with the pelvic floor

    • leaking of pees and poo’s,

    • prolapse,

    • painful sex,

    • pelvic pain

  • why it so important to look after your pelvic floor

  • how a pelvic health physio can help

  • how I incorporate pelvic floor training back into life tasks and fitness
